Vonnegut said that if I want to keep you interested, there is a list of 8 things I must do when writing; for instance, to start as close to the end of the story as possible. Vonnegut, yes, was genius in many ways; however, I do disagree with him on this point.
Why would I want to drag you through that proverbial bush, to get all scraped up and possibly bloody that beautiful expression of yours, when I can politely take you by the hand and delightfully prance all the way around that nasty bush till we arrive at the other side of it? Both completely unscathed, you not only knowing all the reasons and the whys, but also with a much better appreciation for my slight touch of insanity?
See? So, off we go!
